Welcome

My name is Juliet Daniels and I am a Licensed Social Worker who lives in the state of Virginia. I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. I am the second eldest of 5 children.
Diabetic family
My maternal grandparents both had diabetes. My grandmother had a stroke and died. My maternal great-grandmother went blind from it. My aunts and my mother were all diagnosed with diabetes. One aunt’s condition progressed to the point that she was on dialysis. Over time, her mobility deteriorated and she died while in a rehab facility after multiple hospitalizations.
The toll
The experience of seeing people I love not have enough education about diabetes to recognize how serious the consequences can be when their blood sugar level is not managed. They were taught to take medication/s and did not learn to monitor their diet, their exercise level, or their symptoms and this lack of education led to at least one premature death in my family.
The blog
This blog is about sharing the information I am learning and will learn within my scope of practice to help me, your and our loved ones to be able to navigate the medical system, and become our own self-advocates. I will provide information in the arena of self-help and/or self-education about a diagnosis of diabetes. While some of my blogs may cover Stage 1 symptoms and research, this blog is chiefly geared to the pre-diabetic or Stage 11 diabetics.
Self-help/Self-educate
I will cover agencies and organizations that provide medical and pharmaceutical assistance in the United States and how to access their services. My goal is to post a new blog a minimum of twice each month,  regarding diabetes and its impact on people from a medical and mental health point of reference.
